A Day with the Caterpillars

8.30 a.m. Breakfast finishes
Child initiated activities where a carefully considered and regularly changing selection of resources is on offer.

8.45 – 9.30 a.m. A carefully planned combination of adult-directed and child–led activities. Our activities are led by the children’s interests and experiences e.g. if a child has been away on holiday in an aeroplane, we will re-enact this using resources such as big blocks and chairs. We enjoy lots of stories both one to one with a carer and in small groups on the comfy sofa or in the book corner. The children choose what they want to play with and in the conservatory we will have our adult-led activity which may be theme related. This is usually a creative or sensory experience with the adult observing and interacting with the children. We will take our planning and activities from the children where we model and enhance ideas though still taking the children’s lead.

9.30 a.m. Tidy up time – encourage all the children to help and tidy away using our special tidy up song.

9.45 – 10.00 a.m. Adult-led group time. By taking the register we encourage the children to answer to their name, the children say hello to all their friends, waving when they hear their name. We always have a story/rhyme of the week which encourages children’s vital communication and language, and early literacy skills. We discuss topics such as the weather, counting and using flash cards to recognise familiar objects. We do lots of singing together often using props and instruments.

10.00 a.m. Snack time – the children help to recall which name label is whose for their individual water bottles. We discuss what is for snack that day and learn to share and take turns as we pass the snacks around the table

10.15 a.m. – 11.00 a.m. Garden time. Before we go out, we encourage the children to find their own coats and shoes and to try and put them on. There are a range of activities and resources which the children have access to and the adults are there to support them in all areas of the garden. The staff enhance the children’s learning through communication, encouragement and praise.

11.00 a.m. Singing and story time whilst the children wash and dry their hands in preparation for lunch.

11.15  – 12.00 p.m. Lunch time. The children sit down at the table with an adult. The meals are served at the table so the children can see what is on offer and the adult is there to support and encourage the children at this sociable time

12.00 – 2.00 p.m. Sleep time

2.15 p.m. Snack time

2.30 p.m. – 3.10 p.m. A balance of child-initiated and adult-led time. Children may be split into smaller groups to take part in short structured activities such as floor puzzles, games and simple maths activities such as sorting games or creative activities. We also go into the loft room which is changed on a regular basis in accordance with our topics and interests to a variety of different environments.  Examples of our different role-play scenarios include a hospital, hairdressers, vets, home corner, restaurant.
